Firefighters are mourning the the loss of their fire chief, who was found dead in the Artesia fire station Tuesday.
William "Casey" White, fire chief of the Sun Country Volunteer Fire Department was found on the floor of the apparatus bay around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The 70-year-old chief responded to a brush fire Monday night and returned home around midnight, according to a release from the U.S. Fire Administration.
White went to the fire station Tuesday morning to help put equipment on a new piece of apparatus. Around 5:30 p.m. he was found deceased next to the apparatus on the floor. On Wednesday, firefighters escorted White's body from Albuquerque to Arteisa.
